Frost Protection
Irrigation frost protection is where water is sprayed continuously over the plants and soil during periods of freezing temperatures. The latent heat of water, released when the water freezes, is the principal factor involved in protecting the plant. The latent heat absorbed by the plant is enough to keep the plant above its freezing point, except when the air temperature is very low, or when heat is removed rapidly by a cold wind.
Once started, irrigation must continue until the ice is melting and loose. Therefore a back up power source, such as a diesel engine, is essential. Davey stocks Yanmar and Perkins® diesel irrigation packs that can start the diesel engines automatically via inputs from temperature sensors.
